Illustrator Tutorial on Making a Jack in the Box

 

Create the basic head shape using the Elliptical tool. Hold down the Shift key to constrain.

Create the cheeks with the same tool. For the eyes, make the white background and then make a copy of them. Reduce the size and change the colour. For the highlight, create a smaller circle and move it into place. After that choose all of the eye parts and group them. Then duplicate the eye and move it into place.



For the nose, use the Pen tool and create the shape. Make sure to close the lines.



Using the Pen tool compose the mouth.



For the hat, choose the Star tool and click in the board area to open the Options menu. Give the star 3 points.

 


 


Using the Rotate tool move the hat into the right position. Then place the hat on the head.

Choose Show Grid and turn on Snap to Grid. Using the Pen tool create a design as given below.

 


 


Select the top piece. Open 3D and Revolve. Change the Offset to Right Edge.

 


 


The Jack-in-the-Box should now have a body that looks like the one below. Send it to the back using Control and [.

 


 

 

 


With the Rounded Rectangle tool make two rounded rectangles.

 



Duplicate the rounded squares and then apply gradient to three of the four. Apply a design to the most forefront one.

 



Using the Arc tool create the handle.


 


Using the Pen tool create the handle.


Use 3D and Revolve with specified Left Edge.

 


 


After completing this step, choose Expand Appearance. Then use the Rotate tool to rotate the piece.


Choose the body and select Drop Shadow. Change the colour.

 


 


Group everything together. Then select Rasterize with a Transparent background. We are done!
